A study from @theLEGOgroup has shown that 89% of girls in the UK feel pressure to be perfect. 79% of those surveyed believe that the ‘grown-up’ use of the word perfect invokes negative emotions, and 74% admitted to avoiding tasks when they were afraid of not doing them perfectly. We clearly have a problem. The negative pressure to be perfect, or unflinching perfectionism can inhibit growth, confidence and makes whatever you’re doing far less fun. I spoke about this last year with @elleuk, and it’s something that I am often asked about by young athletes. When I was a younger, I used to believe that everything had to go perfectly leading up to a race, or a season, for me to feel ‘ready’. It was only when I had a year in which so many things disrupted the plan, but I still performed well and was still successful that I started to see that my previous mindset wasn’t true and ultimately didn’t serve me best as an athlete. Working with @LEGO to celebrate play and inspire girls to be unstoppable includes publicly breaking myths about perfectionism. Young people should have the space to have fun, fail, laugh about it and try again. Even when we are trying to be the best at something, of course we are chasing excellence, brilliance and success, it’s important to give yourself and young people grace and allow space for mistakes and hurdles in this pursuit.
